What is a host and why do I need one? A host is simply defined as a computer system that can be contacted by other computer systems. In other words, if you have a company Website full of text, graphics, audio clips, on-line ordering, etc. then this site must physically reside on a computer that is connected to the Internet. This in turn allows anyone anywhere in the world with internet access and a browser (such as Netscape) to come to your Website. Fine. Why can't I host my own Website? Well you can if you have the expertise and expensive equipment. You will need experience in UNIX system administration, LAN and WAN networking, routing, setting up gateways, servers, user accounts, gophers, WWW systems, firewalls, security systems, a very fast computer custom configured for your needs, expensive software, a high speed-transmission line (sorry, your phone line isn't going to do the job), and reliable internet access just to start. Or, you could pay a team of experts with the best equipment and let them worry about it. Simply put, that's what we do best. We not only enjoy it, we are affordable! OK then, what should I look for in a host, isn't any internet service provider fine? Absolutely not. One of the most important decisions you will make is where to host your Website. Some internet service providers are o.k., but many are overburdened, mix resources, are impersonal and insensitive to Web hosting needs, and just plain too bureaucratic. Although we do in fact provide internet access to our local Houston customers, this is a separate part of our business and infrastructure. We specialize in World Wide Web services. What does that mean? That means we have the expertise (over 75 years of combined experience in all aspects of computing, networking, and the internet). We are reachable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We are well capitalized, financially stable, prepared, and growing successfully. We have big enough computers to handle both storage and throughput that are carefully load monitored 24 hours a day. We have fiber optic line redundancy, which means we have more than one route to the internet in case one goes down. We have multiple T1 lines which are always ready to come up at a moments notice to handle increased traffic. We keep up to date on the latest security issues, and have in place sound measures to make your site and our network as safe as possible. As an example, we can give you an order form on our secure server to allow you to conduct credit card transactions. We have the absolutely most sophisticated power back up system in existence with a fully integrated power generator and a 24 hour static-free and climate controlled operations center. This means that when the next hurricane comes through, we are going to be drinking coffee at the office and watching your site run flawlessly! How do I make changes and maintain my site? You will be given a private FTP login and password for your site directory on our high-speed Web server. You can make unlimited changes yourself via your computer and internet access locally, or we can update your site for you at $75 per hour (our basic consulting fee). What about Email? As you know, Email affords you the capability of near-instantaneous communication that saves time, paper, and long-distance fees. Included in our hosting service is at least one forwardable Email alias. This is simply a name, such as [email protected] that forwards to an existing local Email box that you currently check. In addition, you also get a regular (POP3) Email box with at least our Standard account, which you log into and check separately. If you have a custom registration form on your Website (if you do not we can set one up for you for $75), the information submitted from your site will simply forward (like an alias) to your local Email box, notifying you that the message is from your Website. Great! What else comes with the service? With at least our Standard account, you get at least one form on a secure server. This gives you the ability to request sensitive, e.g., credit card, information from your site. You have the capability to implement a full shopping-cart mechanism for on-line ordering. We fully support CGI scripts, JAVA, Real Audio, video, etc. We can custom build you a database if you need it. We will provide you detailed hit statistics and log file reports so that you can see how many times who, what, and when someone accessed your site. Ok. I trust your expertise and service.
