TATTOOS... Should They Still Be Taboo at Private Clubs?

What do you think about visible tattoos at private clubs? Should clubs “keep up with the times” by making it acceptable for employees to display their tattoos? Or should clubs stand firm and forbid their presence on both staff AND members? Our July Issue of PCA included an article called “Taboo Tattoos,” and requested feedback on this subject! In my personal opinion, I believe the tattoo decision should be based on the culture of the private club. Some clubs may be welcoming of relaxed policies allowing employees, as well as members, to show off their body art at any time. Other clubs may frown upon visible employee tattoos and may request members keep them covered as well. Or there may be certain locations at the club where tattoos are okay and other locations where they are not (i.e., the swimming pool, casual dining room). It is certainly a tricky subject as enforcing these kinds of policies can be time consuming and may present some awkward situations.

Regardless of the route a club decides to go, policies should be communicated regularly to both members and staff. And stay tuned for a follow up article with a summary of the feedback we receive!
